Study in Germany from Pakistan: the complete guide.

Requirements, costs, the student visa process, scholarships and the honest truth, written for students in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and every city in between.

💶 Is education in Germany free for Pakistani students?

For most programmes at public universities, yes. Germany abolished general tuition fees at public universities, and that applies to Pakistani and other non-EU students too. You pay a semester contribution of roughly €100–€400, which usually covers student services and often a regional public transport ticket.

There are exceptions. The state of Baden-Württemberg (Heidelberg, KIT, Stuttgart, Freiburg, Mannheim) charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester, TU Munich charges international tuition, and private universities charge fees. We show the real cost of every programme on your shortlist.

For a Bachelor's in Germany

  • After FSc / ICS / ICom: Studienkolleg (foundation year) or one year of a related BS in Pakistan
  • After A-Levels: direct admission is often possible with the right subject combination
  • IBCC-attested certificates and language proof (German B1 for most Studienkollegs)

Low CGPA or study gap? Don't self-reject. Read our low-CGPA playbook first.

🧮 How much does it cost in total?

Here's a realistic first-year budget for a Pakistani student at a tuition-free public university (exchange rates move, so we'll recalculate in PKR for you):

ItemApprox. (EUR)
Blocked account (living costs for 12 months)~€11,904
Semester contribution × 2€200–€800
uni-assist & application fees€75–€300
Visa fee€75
IELTS / German exams€150–€300
Flight (one-way)€450–€800
Initial rent deposit & setup€600–€1,200

The blocked account isn't a "fee". It's your own money, paid back to you monthly in Germany.

FAQ

Study in Germany from Pakistan: quick answers

Is IELTS required for a Germany student visa from Pakistan?

Language proof is required for your admission. For English-taught programmes most universities ask for IELTS, though some accept an MOI letter or other tests. Your visa file must show the language proof your university accepted. A strong IELTS score generally makes both steps smoother.

How many years of education do I need for a master's in Germany?

Usually 16 years. A 4-year BS/BE degree, or a 14-year BA/BSc plus a 2-year MA/MSc, typically qualifies. A 14-year degree alone is generally not enough for a German master's.

Can I take my family to Germany as a student?

Family reunification for students is possible in some cases but comes with extra financial and housing requirements. Most students go alone first and plan family reunification after finding work.

How long does the whole process take?

Plan for 6–9 months from your first profile check to arriving in Germany, and longer if you still need IELTS or German. Starting 10–12 months ahead of your target intake is ideal.

Can I stay in Germany after my studies?

Yes. Graduates can apply for an 18-month residence permit to look for work. Once employed in a qualified job, you can move to an EU Blue Card or skilled-worker permit, which can lead to permanent residence.
